A new way to engage members

In March of 2019 we challenged climbers At Crux Climbing Center in Austin, TX to climb the distance of El Capitan, The Nose over the course of the month. We limited registration to 50 climbers and the event sold out within 24 hours with a wait list of an additional 40 climbers.

Preparing for the event

To prepare for the event we collaborated with Crux to organize a coordinated release on social media and gathered over $1000 in prizes donated from local businesses. Climbalytics developed a microsite with information about the event and a registration form that integrated with Crux's payment system. Crux members could also register in-person at the gym.

Who were the participants?

Climbers had different reasons for participating in the the El Cap Challenge. Some wanted to be the first to reach the summit. Two climbers completed the challenge in a matter of hours, early in the morning on the day the event began. Others wanted to climb the furthest. One dedicated participant climbed 10,000 feet! Nearly three times the distance required to summit. The youngest participant to summit was 14 years old.

El Cap brought new members to the gym

There were several participants who were not members and either purchased a membership just for the event or used day passes. Two climbers even travelled 75+ miles from San Antonio each week to participate.

Snack purchases were up

El Cap participants were spending so much time in the gym that they spent significant more on snacks compared to the previous month.

Crux was featured in Gripped Magazine

As part of the event we worked with Crux's PR agency to float a story about how the gym was using new technology to enhance the climbing experience. As part of that effort we landed a story in Gripped Magazine.

Infographic summary of the event

To share what we learned about the event with Crux and the public we put together an inforgraphic summarizing some of the data collected. This detailed information can be useful for the gym, their setters and climbers.
